# Getting started

> Your first drawing in MellowCAD: the command line, prompts and options, the drafting aids, undo and saving.

MellowCAD works like AutoCAD: you type a command, answer its prompts, and the drawing follows. If you already use AutoCAD, [the commands](https://mellowcad.com/docs/commands.md) and [the differences](https://mellowcad.com/docs/differences.md) are all you need; this page is for the first ten minutes.

## Open the editor

[Open the editor](/draw) in a desktop browser. There is nothing to install and no account to make. The drawing is kept in this browser as you work, and is there again the next time you open it.

## Type a command

Type on the drawing, wherever the cursor is: the letters go to the command line at the bottom, which suggests the commands they start. Enter or Space runs the command. `LINE` draws lines, and so does its shorter alias; every alias is on [the commands page](https://mellowcad.com/docs/commands.md).

## Answer the prompts

A command asks one thing at a time, at the command line and beside the cursor. A point is a click on the drawing, or two coordinates typed as `x,y`. After the first point, typed coordinates are measured from the last point, as AutoCAD's dynamic input measures them, and the history writes them with `@`; `#x,y` is measured from the origin instead. A distance typed alone goes that far in the direction of the cursor.

```text
Command: LINE
Specify first point: 0,0
Specify next point or [Undo]: @100,0
Specify next point or [Undo]: @0,60
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @-100,0
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: C
```

## Choose an option

The options a prompt offers are in square brackets, each with its capital letters: type those letters and press Enter. A value in angle brackets is the default, and Enter takes it.

```text
Command: CIRCLE
Specify center point for circle or [3P/2P/Ttr (tan tan radius)]: 50,30
Specify radius of circle or [Diameter]: D
Specify diameter of circle: 40
```

## End, repeat, cancel

Enter or Space ends a command that keeps asking, such as `LINE`, and with no command running they repeat the last one. A right-click opens a menu with the same choices. Esc cancels. Every key is on [the shortcuts page](https://mellowcad.com/docs/shortcuts.md).

## Draw precisely

Object snaps take the cursor to the exact points of what is drawn: ends, middles, centres. `F3` turns them on and off, `F8` Ortho and `F10` polar tracking, as their buttons on the status bar do.

## Change what is drawn

An editing command asks for the objects to work on, or first for a value, as `OFFSET` does: the distance, the object, then the side to put the copy on.

```text
Command: OFFSET
Current settings: Erase source=No  Layer=Source  OFFSETGAPTYPE=0
Specify offset distance or [Through/Erase/Layer] <Through>: 8
Select object to offset or [Exit/Undo] <Exit>:
Specify point on side to offset or [Exit/Multiple/Undo] <Exit>:
```

## Undo and redo

`U` or `Ctrl+Z` undoes the last command, whole, and `Ctrl+Y` redoes it. Inside a command that offers it, its own undo option takes back one step, such as one segment of `LINE`.

## Save

The drawing is kept in this browser as you work. `QSAVE` or `Ctrl+S` downloads it as a file in MellowCAD's own versioned format, and `OPEN` or `Ctrl+O` opens one; [saving is not quite AutoCAD's](https://mellowcad.com/docs/differences.md#saving).
